Broken Tuning Machine

Hey,

I bought a used Streamer Jazzman 5 strings, made in 2002. I cleaned it and set it up and all was fine except the D string tuner (original from the factory), which was very hard to turn, even after cleaning and oiling it. A few weeks later, the shaft suddenly snapped while I was tuning the D string. Is this common ? I've never had this happen to any of my basses or guitar before. Here is a pic :

Sadly this is common to Warwick tuners. You can just replace that one or swap them all for something better like Hipshot or Gotoh.

This is common, happened me twice with my sold Corvette $$ from 2008 before I swapped them all.

Thanks for the replies. The fact that it's a common issue is very surprising considering, the high quality (and price !) of Warwick basses. Even mid range Cort basses are equipped with Hipshot tuners ! Why didn't they fix this problem (the way they did for the just a nut II for example) ? I already replaced the tuner with a Warwick one, if I knew beforehand that it was common for them to break I would have gotten a set of better ones. The G string tuner is also getting stiff...

They changed it for the Customshop basses now. They are all equipped with Schallers again.

I just finished cleaning / waxing my new Infinity 5 SN 2002 and upon restringing, the tuning peg for the A string (i.e. left side) broke. I have attached a picture, and just for fun added another picture of a freshly waxed Zebrano Infinity.
Guess I will get a replacement Warwick tuner, despite the mediocre quality.

Well, this was easier than I thought: the new Schaller M4 90 tuners fit perfectly and work really smooth. They also look nice, although I could live without the prominent "Made in Germany", but anyways: the Infinity is happy

The made in Germany lettering was a little bit smaller in older times, i think that this was nicer

Aside from the newer Schallers which I definitely want to get at some point... I can vouch for the Gotoh GB707. Japanese made, great quality, very solid. I have em’ on all mine except the JD, which of course has the original Schallers.

This happened to me on the G tuner now. 2/5 have already been replaced. Are the current Warwick tuners ok, or should i opt for another brand? Is it better to change all 5 or 1 and 1 as they break?

Same advice to you previously mentioned mate, replace with better stuff! And replacing all at the same time is easier, and probably cheaper in the long run.

Gotoh is my favourite, but you do you!

Replacing tuners is an easy job. Schaller never had quality issues afaik.

They are about 50% more expensive on the Warwick shop however, so I would advise to shop elsewhere.
