I've just bought a 1988 Thumb with the separate battery compartment. However, the battery cover is missing its prong, so doesn't stay closed. I believe Warwick no longer sell those covers (they're not in the shop). However, there are a couple of MEC single 9V battery compartments in the shop, one with an integrated lid and one with a detachable lid. Would either of these fit in the recess with no need for surgery? There are no dimensions given. These are the parts:

WARWICK MEC Exterior Battery Compartment for 1 x 9V Battery

WARWICK MEC Exterior Battery Compartment for 1 x 9V Battery, with detachable lid

The second one will fit - I got one of those for my old Thumb.

Thanks. Can I just pry the old box out, or do I need to get destructive?

You should be able to simply unscrew it.
