Heh nice Greg. I love those basses too.
You all should check out Carl Thompson's basses too.

And of course, there can't be a thread like this without the CS.

I imagine it would have a very full range of tones with those Neo Q-tuner pickups in it.

I like those Carl Thompsons. Even the new ones have a cool vintage vibe to them.

Not a bass... But I would love to get this as a top & back on my thumb :D
My favorite wood for use as a top... SNAKEWOOD! Although I heard it's extremly hard to find goo sized peices so the top would have to be 2 or even 3 peice.

Yeah... I think I saw some thuya burl earlier today... I really like the way (and I hate to say this) figured walnut crotch (I laugh everytime I say that) looks.

Snakewood ??

You know what I really don't get ?? Snakewood is supposed to be super exclusive....... but I believe Gibson has got some kind of modern bass made out of ECO woods that include a Snakewood top (trust me, I double checked....)!!! And that whole thing costs only like 1k $ or 1.5k ................I couldn't find the bass right now on the net.............. but that's really weird..............not "just" the fingerboard......but the entire body...........

That's weird... I read about snakewood and they say the trunk of the tree is between 12 - 20 inches... and most of it is sap... then when the wood is cut and dryed it gets even smaller... so they say it's quite hard to make it as a top. So unless I can find a big slab of it or 2 good sized peices I'll be out of having a snakewood top :p

I noticed gibson is starting to use more exotic woods now...

It's a fascinating phenomenon,

can you imagine finding this awesome piece of Snakewood while cutting the tree, and you think like man, this is one fine piece of wood................and then you acclimate the piece as careful as you can, and one day after like a year or so, you notice this huge crack in the centre.....................ahwwwwwwwww.
I believe that's one of the problems with snakewood: it requires careful acclimatisation.

Snakewood is mostly used as a fret board, but would probably work better as a top. Its very hard to work with, when they try to stabalize it for use on fretboards 8 times out of 10 it breaks. I ordered a custom Norstrand singlecut a long time ago (she should be in the works by summer) and inquired about snake wood for a fretboard and that was what carey explained to me, and the guy I was going to buy the wood from said something along the same lines..

They say it is like 10 times more harder than any type of ebony. Kind of like petrified wood. It must have a lovely *snap* when its a fretboard.
