Hello, does anybody know if Warwick constructs shorter scale instruments? I am interested in a 32" 5string Corvette Ash. If yes, would that be considered a custom (more expensive) instrument? Do you think the shorter scale would compromise the sound? I am also concerned about the possibility of the shorter neck looking slightly disharmonic to the body. I wonder if the body is resized also. Any comments on shorter scale Warwicks (if there are any out there of course) would be really welcome.

Thanks a million.

Warwick does make shorter scale necks but this is indeed a custom option. I doubt it would add more than $200 to the original price though. I'm pretty sure it would have an effect on the sound but I'm not sure what sort of effect that is. The body won't be resized. It would definitely look disharmonic to the body which is why I don't really like short-scale basses. A bass should have at least 34"s :!: .

Actually they only make shortscale basses on bolt on 4-string instruments. Before they did not charge any extra. A short scale bass could be good for a tenor or piccolo bass but otherwise I agree that it should be a 34 or 35" scale in order to produce the real Warwick quality sound.

I did the natural thing and inquired the company. I just thought I should post this reply from my inbox. I am just starting to realize how cool Warwick must be... 8) You people should already know. :D

Dear forum users,

we dont know how such an email got to the public. The truth is: all Warwick standard basses are long scale (34"). All other scales (short 30", medium 32", extra long 35") are custom shop options with upcharge.

Well, at least I know how it got to me.
What follows is the complete e-mail message source of the reply I received after inquiring [email protected] about ordering a 32" instrument. You can find my inquiry at the end of the reply.
Except for my email address, I assure you I have not changed anything else.
I was actually happy to read this reply.
Best Regards.

Dear Warwick users,

we apologize for this mistake!

Scales other than long scale (34") are a custom shop option and will be charged extra.

For custom shop requests please refer to [email protected].[/b]

According to the price list on the US site , it does say there is an upcharge for bolt-on necks in scales 30" 32" and 35"

Still, I don't think the shorter scale will choke the tone. After all, Warwick 5-strings have some of the best, tightest, most even-sounding low-B strings I've ever heard on a 34" scale bass, surpassing the B's on many 35" scale basses. And most bassists out there do think that you need at least 35" scale for a good, non-muddy low B.
