I've decided I'd like a mobile recording solution, and that means a laptop. I can spend about $1,000 US, maybe a bit more if necessary (let's cap it around $1,200 US, or roughly 1,100 euros). I plan on running Reaper, and I have a Tascam US 2x2 USB interface. I'd prefer SSD, and minimum 16GB RAM. So far the only one I've found that ticks all the boxes is the Dell Inspiron 15 7000.

I do wonder if 16GB is strictly necessary. I have 8GB on my desktop computer and it runs Reaper just fine, but I haven't really done any major projects on it.

Any thoughts? Recommendations? Thanks.

If you can afford it, I would definitely recommend going for the 16 gig version; extra memory really helps a lot!

Yeah, I've more or less decided that 8GB is a deal breaker.

I've added the Lenovo Thinkpad X390 to the list of possibilities. There's a 16GB version for about $1,100 US.

The extra RAM would probably not do much for recording, but if you should want to use a lot of plugins / VST‘s / virtual instruments etc., the 16 GB will help.

I'm thinking that the laptop will mostly be for recording, and the actual mixing would be done on my desktop. That said, my desktop only has 8GB, so it may turn out that a 16GB laptop will work better for mixing. Of course, the desktop is easily upgraded to 16GB (as are many laptops).
