Dick Lövgren from Meshuggah said an interesting thing about Warwicks, that's also very true:
"You can immediately hear if there's a good bass player or not with a Warwick and if you're good, you can shape the sound with your playing style. With other bass guitars it just doesn't matter; they often sound flat and boring, like bad triggers on a drumkit."

I think there is a perception that if you play a Wick you're a more serious or more dedicated player, but then that's true of a few high end brand names. It's the usual association of high cost = professional.
+1 on shaping the sound with your fingers. I think I sound like me playing regardless of what I play through (or with). I recently played a rehearsal with another bass player who complemented me on my sound (especially considering it was through a 2x10 combo).
