Greetings all!

I've been given the green light to finally get my Thumb NT5 but i have a bit of a problem deciding on a new Amp and Cab for the bass. What do you guys think is the best for the natural sound of the thumb? Basically i main play at hom and want to bring out the natural tone. I was thinking of going a Tubepath 5.1 through a 411 pro, but the price of the tubepath over here (in aus) is quite expensive. Another option would be going a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.2 through the uber 410 unit. I want to ability later on to add a 115 to this.

So what do you guys/girls recommend for Amp and Cabs?

Best regards,
Matt

Hi Matt! The mighty Thumb 5NT will sound good on any quality amp for sure. I could mention more than 20 brands. BUT: this is a matter of taste. There is no such thing as an ultimate amp/ cab combination for the thumb. I´d recommend you take out your baby to a well- assorted dealer and give some amps and cabs a shot and then decide what sounds best to your ears.

Hi Kessian,

I used to play thumb NT, I had a few of them... It was the only bass I couldn't touch the EQ. The bass is perfect, anything you try to do sounds worse, haha :)
So buy a good quality amp, and leave everything flat, that's it!

If you are on a medium budget, I recommend you this"
Hellborg Preamp
Cheap 500W Power Amp, for PA
Any cabs you like :)

Focus on the preamp, because that will deliver the awesome thumb goodness to the FOH

cheers,
Flo

All depends on what you want your Thumb to sound like. Anything is possible with this instrument.

Want my thumb to just sound like I thumb :) basically the cleanest amp. I like that idea florin. Yes I saw your thread schlo. How much del to perth wa Australia 6104?

In terms of power amp what would you recommend? Crest ca6 or 9, or something like that. Seen as though you have a tubepath florin how does tgat work for you?

You also need to add if you like tube or solid state or hybrid amps. In the Early days of Mudvayne, Ryan used Ampeg. Now I know Ampegs aren't cheap, but if you want a similar tone for the right price, get a Sansamp or better yet a VT to plug into your signal chain. It's beef up any clean head.

I'd recommend Orange Terror Bass 500 for hybrids. Something like Hartke or GK with a VT or Sansamp to beef up the solid state. Then pick up any cab you want. That's just about all I can think in cheap amps. If you have a tad more in your budget, Trace Elliot Combos are good too.

Maybe consider waiting a few months to buy the new LWA 1000, and try to borrow an amp from someone in the meantime. Then take the LWA 1000 in to your local shop and try to pair it with a cab (or cabs) that suits your ear. Everything I hear about (vids) Warwick's new micro amp...sounds very clean and transparent. :)

Imo, worth waiting for...:)

Regarding the poweramp I am not with flo
The more real headroom the better.
Something cheap might unduly compress
The signal when hit hard:)

Man, this Little Mark II, for the money, really pushes a really unmolested sound out of it. I recently got a Thumb BO and it sounds great through this thing, almost as pure as direct and through headphones.

There are better options, though. This is just my backup amp, but it would be fine if you don't need anything as pro-level as the Hellborg stuff.

I can say that the ThumbNT through a Tubepath 10.1 and two 4x10 cabs is a force to be reckoned with. I'd wager that the ThumbNT and the Tubepath are a match made in heaven. Even with the EQ flat on the amp and bass it cuts right through in a metal situation and the more you dig on the bass the angrier it becomes. The Tubepath willingly takes that growl and dishes it back out.

It is a good solution for a tight budget. To me on stage all that matters is to have a good signal to the front. What I actually hear on stage is not important at all to me, as long as it is loud, and it comes from something that looks like a 4x 10" or something :) and I actually did that with a Cheap Tamp, and I was quite happy :)

Let's be honest, the moment you decide to play rock, as in... With a guitarist, the sound on stage will NEVER be perfect, no matter what amp you use, so what bother? :)
But the stage in front can be perfect, so that's why I take my Hellborg pre with me :)

You have to remember i mainly play at home :) So what's on stage doesn't bother me one bit. I really wouldn't mind trying out the tubepath 5.1 through a 411 pro, but unfortunately trying to find one even for sale here is hard, let alone playing one :)
