What's YOUR favourite solo?

If I get into a topic of favorite solo, the first thing to always come on my mind is Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". It's not your ideal shred or speedpicking solo, but when it comes to emotion, it is second to none. David Gilmour is indeed an amazing guitarist. He does not need to prove himself by playing millions of notes but instead makes it up on melody and soul.

Andy West on the bass, ripping with a pick. Tommy Aldridge on the drums. Tony MacAlpine on the keys. Killer raw rhythm guitar and raw overall production. Both solos are killer. It's an obscure unknown track from Vin's phenomenal debut, I just love it.

Should you dismiss it as simply shredding, I would be very worried for you.

But anyway, I would prefer latter stuffs of Vinnie Moore like the album The Maze (which has Dave Larue on bass) and Defying Gravity. And though I also like the debut album of Vinnie Moore, I would have to agree with some that he still lacked creativity in his songwriting. But of course, it was his debut and he was still young. And shredding was still a new thing in town.

The Maze was the first record of Vin's I listened to, pretty much awesome as it combines different musical elements and obvious maturity. It is true that the ideas in Mind's Eye are not very mature and there are patterns that get repeated throughout different songs, but the raw youthful power he brings out is phenomenal. It is a spontaneous record full of youthful vitality. He recorded the rhythm parts in two days, and all the lead parts and solos in three days. The whole production was just 11 days! Anyway I stop, I make this sound like a guitar forum!

I don't want to look like a snob for posting a jazz solo but it really is my favorite. I love how individualized it is. The composition sounds like Monk (though he co-wrote it with Hanighen), his swinging patterns sound like Monk, his phrasing sounds like Monk. He achieved his own sound much like all of us here are trying to do.

I'd rather prefer the part where he does the stage stunt with Tony MacAlpine, Billy Sheehan and Dave Weiner. It's simply a showcase of guitar solos. :d

Man, I love solos - as long as they're not a simple display of the size of the player's b***s (as too many solos are), but to take the song/piece further. Elsewhere. Whatever.

Guitar-wise, I love DT's "Under the Glass Moon" - it's still rough, it's a bit of a Vai-rip-off, but hey… Or Tony MacAlpine's "Tears of Sahara".
And then, after skimming my iTunes folder for an hour - the very first song of the very first LedZep-album, Page says it all. As does Jones, btw… No need for another solo.

Well, yes, arhm, Steve Vai's "Building the Church" is pretty cool, too (but then, talking about b***s…).
And Whitesnake's "Wings of the Storm" (which, in all honesty, I was able to play, back in the days of my wasted youth
And just about any Iron Maiden solo.
Did I mention that I love solos?

As for bass solos - everyone knows we have large youknowwhats. So why bother with a solo?!

This is definitely one of my favourite solos. The whole C part of the song starting around 2:43. An awesome young guitarist Matias Kupiainen joins Jens Johansson's piano part with guitar solo and progresses over a pseudo chorus to an actual chorus with a very unique touch.

I didn't know these guys where still around after the Tolkki stir. His guitar tone is unique, makes it sound like keyboards actually, especially in the last part. Very Yng inspired playing, and he's so clean and fast. I like such players lots.
